Madeline & Sam’s Magical Storytime @ Boneshaker Books, 2002 23rd Ave S • 11am
It is our mission with this story time to promote children’s books that shine a spotlight on a wide array of racial and cultural identities, genders, orientations, experiences and abilities. We want to create a space that places a special emphasis on promoting self love, empathy and a greater understanding of the strange, magical world we inhabit. There is serious deficit in children’s books that depict protagonists who are a people of color, people with disabilities, LGBTQIA+ or any combination of the above. That is why Madeline and Sam’s Magical Story Time seeks out books that do just that. Positive representation in books is crucial to a child’s development of a positive self image. It can be absolutely life affirming for a child to see a protagonist who reflects them accomplishing anything they set their mind to. It is also crucial in developing empathy for a child to experience diversity at a young age. This story time will not only be educational, but spectacularly fun! Before each reading we will have one minute wiggle parties and coloring pages that correlate with that weeks books.

2nd Saturday Songwriter Showcase @ Riverview Café, 3753 42nd Ave S • 6:45pm
Join Cathie English, Nigel Egg, and Liz Wilkinson & AJ Scheiber for a night of great original songs and performances. Tonight’s showcase will be hosted by Dan Rumsey. Music starts at 6:45pm. Come early!
Cathie English is a central Minnesota singer/ songwriter. Writing beautifully crafted songs accompanied with her distinctive American fingerstyle guitar technique . Woven through her music is a reverence for nature and the honest storytelling emblematic of the folk genre. She’s performs at festivals and venues throughout throughout Minnesota.
Singer-songwriter Nigel Egg is a British transplant based in Minnesota who tours internationally, performing over 150 dates per year. Nigel has been compared to a bluesy Paul Simon (but taller) – his music is a totally unique and modern sound but reflects a music history that goes back to playing with legends like Supertramp and Mott The Hoople in the 1970s. More recently, Nigel Egg has opened for David Bromberg, Geoff Muldaur, Richard Thompson and Leon Russell. His newest (2014) album, The Blues Is Personal, is receiving world-wide acclaim and radio play.Nigel Egg is a professional entertainer with 40 years of making music.
Singer-songwriters Liz Wilkinson and AJ Scheiber met up and began performing together in 2008. Their first (self-titled) album, released in 2014, reflected their love of folk, honky-tonk, and country blues, and proudly displayed the singing and songwriting style they developed playing the taprooms and coffee dens of the Twin Cities as a duo. Over the last couple of years that folk duo has grown into a full band that regularly features dobro and saxophone in addition to bass and drums. Their most recent release, “Abandon” (Fall 2016) shows how the Wilkinson James sound has evolved to include touches of jazz, country-rock, and swing, while still holding true to Liz’s and AJ’s original core concept, which one fan described as “the bastard offspring of June Carter Cash and Townes Van Zandt.”

Behold, the second edition of this essential bucket list guide awaits you. Whether it’s strolling the Stone Arch Bridge in Minneapolis, sipping a drink on Frost’s patio in St. Paul on a warm summer night, or biking to Stillwater for lunch on the St. Croix River, we’ve got you covered. We’re ready to introduce you to outdoor activities that will let you declare victory over the harsh Minnesota winters. But there are also plenty of things to do indoors when Jack Frost truly has it in for you.
The hearty Minnesotan will know it’s a fool’s errand to let weather dictate life’s pleasures, and one hundred activities for all seasons await you. Two truly is better than one, and the Twin Cities are waiting to be explored. Enjoy some pro tips too, to enhance your adventures. Tom Weber has been a journalist for nearly two decades, most recently with Minnesota Public Radio News. Originally from the Chicago area, he quickly embraced all things Minnesota. Tom lives in St. Paul and generally likes to spend his free time outside (even in the winter), and enjoys biking, hiking, running, and cross-country skiing. From the publisher (The New Press): …”although the harsh disciplining of adolescent behavior has been called out as part of a school-to-prison pipeline, the children we meet in these pages demonstrate how a child’s path to excessive punishment and exclusion in fact begins at a much younger age.” Sponsored by Elementary Teacher Education and Department of curriculum and Instruction, University of Minnesota.
