The Song of Sway Lake Minneapolis Screenings @ Trylon Cinema, 2820 E 33rd St • 5pm
Director: Ari Gold w/Rory Culkin, Mary Beth Peil and Brian Dennehy. It’s summer on Sway Lake, the most glamorous lake in the Adirondacks – former playground of the jazz-age New York aristocracy. Music collector Ollie Sway recruits his only friend, a rowdy Russian drifter, to help him steal a 78 record from his own family’s estate. Ollie believes that this mysterious piece of music – recorded at his grandparents’ wedding by Cole Porter’s lover – was hidden for him by his father before his suicide. He believes possessing the record will change his life. The boys’ mission should be as easy as meeting a pretty girl on the water, but the arrival of the beguiling matriarch herself, Charlie Sway, changes everything. For Charlie has her own plans. And this song that hasn’t been heard in half a century may possess the answer to the deepest riddles about love and death – for whichever of these three lost souls will be the first to find it.

Saturday, September 22
It is our mission with this story time to promote children’s books that shine a spotlight on a wide array of racial and cultural identities, genders, orientations, experiences and abilities. We want to create a space that places a special emphasis on promoting self love, empathy and a greater understanding of the strange, magical world we inhabit. There is serious deficit in children’s books that depict protagonists who are a people of color, people with disabilities, LGBTQIA+ or any combination of the above. That is why Madeline and Sam’s Magical Story Time seeks out books that do just that. Positive representation in books is crucial to a child’s development of a positive self image. It can be absolutely life affirming for a child to see a protagonist who reflects them accomplishing anything they set their mind to. It is also crucial in developing empathy for a child to experience diversity at a young age. This story time will not only be educational, but spectacularly fun! Before each reading we will have one minute wiggle parties and coloring pages that correlate with that weeks books.

HUMBIRD After traversing 5 continents and 20 countries with only a guitar and a backpack, Humbird returns home to sing songs from the edge of the world. Combining a wintry longing with the warmth of a familiar folktale, Humbird stretches traditional genres of folk and Americana to embrace the unexpected. Creating music out of a mosaic of influences like Joni Mitchell, Bon Iver and Bill Frisell, Humbird weaves it all together with powerful lyrics and a stubborn pursuit of the sound of the North.
Roscoe & Etta (Maia Sharp & Anna Schulze) With ornery tuning keys and rattling fret boards, Roscoe and Etta are a pair of aged arch top guitars possessing wills of their own. Maia Sharp and Anna Schulze are two singer-songwriter-producers who play these instruments and claim title to their names as Roscoe & Etta, on their eponymous debut. Both artists maintain vibrant careers as artists and songwriters. Anna, originally from Minnesota, has released five well-regarded solo projects, placed songs in the Oscar-winning documentary Icarus and the MTV series Awkward, and been featured in the digital magazine This is Melo.

Birchwood Cafe Artist Reception: Ginger Shafer @ Birchwood Café, 3311 E 25th St. • 6pm
Our love of local farmers and local artists collide in our current art show, “Riverbend Farm” by Ginger Shafer. Riverbend has been supplying Birchwood Cafe with local organic vegetables for over twenty years. Ginger was first introduced to Greg and Mary Reynolds and their picturesque organic farm on a Crop Mob over ten years ago and has been painting out there ever since. Stop by to meet Ginger, peruse her paintings (they are all for sale!) and say hello to Greg and Mary too! We’ll have light bites and sips. All are welcome! And please consider joining us at Riverbend for our last CROP MOB at Riverbend Farm – September 2018! About Ginger: When I was twelve when I encountered the art of Georgia O’Keefe on a visit to Ghost Ranch in New Mexico. Seeing her world firsthand, and then through her paintings was a powerful experience. It sparked my interest in painting. I received a BFA from Parsons School of Design in New York. In class I had many influential teachers like Maurice Sendak, and David Passalacqua, and in the cities museums I learned from Rembrandt, Vermeer, Van Gogh, Sorolla, and Cezanne. My greatest teacher is nature. Whether it’s the way light draws itself upon a landscape or the way color combinations appear in front of you, painting is a way for me to experience and understand the world. It is an alchemy of emotion, touch, and vision. I have been in many group exhibitions; and my paintings are in private collections across the country. I hope you enjoy my work. ~Ginger Shafer

Reading with Silvia Hidalgo from How to Be An American @ Moon Palace Books, 3032 Minnehaha Ave • 7pm
Join us for an event with Silvia Hidalgo, author of the new book How to Be An American: A Field Guide to Citizenship. The current political climate has left many of us wondering how our government actually operates. Sure, we learned about it in school, but if put to the test, how many of us can correctly explain the branches of government? The history of politics? The differences and connections between local government and federal government? Enter How to Be an American. While author and illustrator Silvia Hidalgo was studying for her citizenship test, she quickly found that the materials provided by the government were lacking. In order to more easily absorb the information, Hidalgo started her own illustrated reference to civics facts and American history essentials. She’s collected her findings in How to Be an American, a freshly designed and illustrated two-color guide to all things America. Born in Costa Rica, Silvia Hidalgo moved to the United States in 1998. Currently an artist as well as a freelance graphic designer and illustrator, she has worked for corporations such as SRAM and Motorola. She lives in Chicago. https://moonpalacebooks.com//?q=h.calevent&eid=3565
