SUMMARY:Southside Stories: Our North Star Journey
DESCRIPTION:Greg McMoore is a lifelong South Minneapolis resident and current board member of Hennepin History Museum. He recently completed an Arthur C. McWatt Fellowship to further explore the story of his family’s “North Star Journey.” Greg will share the story about his Wallace family ancestors: their migration from enslavement in Virginia; arrival to freedom in Hastings\, Minnesota; and then their final destination in south Minneapolis. The family’s first Minneapolis home was at 416 E 25th St\, which was destroyed by the construction of I-35W in the 1960s. This was ground zero of the negative impact to the African American community in south Minneapolis and the eventual development of  segregated communities. \nParticipants will hear a presentation about this story\, share a meal\, and engage in conversation and storytelling about family life and community in south Minneapolis. The setting will appropriately be at St. Peter’s AME church\, a bedrock institution in the community and is organized by the Hennepin History Museum. \n  \nGet tickets!

SUMMARY:Facing the Fire: A Public Art Installation
DESCRIPTION:“Facing the Fire” is an ongoing public art project\, devised by Minneapolis artist Paul Herwig\, to reflect on the murder of George Floyd\, police brutality\, and the civil unrest of 2020. Originally presented in the fall of 2022 on Lake Street East\, east of Hiawatha Avenue in the Longfellow Neighborhood of Minneapolis\, “Facing the Fire” was composed of seven performances of projection art and sound conducted on abandoned and damaged properties all along Lake Street. \nLocal music and sound artist Queen Drea participated in two of those performances\, and is the composer and curator of the music in this iteration of Facing the Fire. It was at that first performance here at the ruins of the former 3rd Precinct where Paul met Chris Mozena\, board member of Longfellow Rising\, who then pitched the idea of remounting Facing the Fire\, with a deeper focus on social justice\, and the municipal neglect of the property\, which is a persistent reminder of the horrible events of that summer and an ever-present eyesore that magnifies the City’s longstanding inability to address the community’s needs. \n \nThe projection art in Facing the Fire is composed of hundreds of images sourced from local and international media\, street art from around the nation\, graphs whose statistics chart the violence perpetrated onto local communities by outside radical fascist groups\, archival images from the history of civil unrest along last Street since the 1900’s\, and many recent images of the destroyed buildings in the neighborhood\, images of citizens protesting during the summer of 2020\, and children\, for whom we need to build a better future. \nThis temporary art installation of projection and sound will be installed and run in a loop for 2 hours between 8pm and 10pm each evening twice weekly in April starting Friday April 7th (with an additional performance on Tuesday April 11th). That is: April 7-11-13-14-20-21-27-29. \nFor more information about Paul Herwig (the artist) can be found at: https://www.futureprojections.net/facing-the-fire.html. For more information about Longfellow Rising\, contact LR Board Chair: Jamie Schwesnedl at jamie@moonpalacebooks.com \nPaul is immensely grateful for the support of Longfellow Rising’s funding of this project. \n*Images of the projection art to be projected on the property are courtesy of artist Paul Herwig.

SUMMARY:Earth Day River Clean Up with Friends of the Mississippi River
DESCRIPTION:Taking place just off of West River Parkway\, this cleanup is an Earth Day tradition in the Minneapolis River Gorge. People come from throughout the local river corridor\, neighborhoods and metro area – individuals\, families\, small church\, corporate and student or scout groups – to celebrate Earth Day and contribute to the health and vitality of the Mississippi River. All are welcome! This is a family-friendly event providing an excellent opportunity to get outside and work together to help improve this treasured area. We’ve returned to this site year after year and have noticed a dramatic improvement to the area thanks to dedicated volunteers like you! \nTo participate\, show up at 9:30 a.m. at either location (East 36th Street & West River Parkway or East 44th Street & West River Parkway) to sign in with FMR staff. We’ll provide all the supplies\, but feel free to wear your own gloves if you have them. Sturdy shoes and dressing in layers for the weather are strongly suggested. There will pizza from Parkway Pizza and snacks for those volunteering. \nOur two locations for this cleanup are paved parking lots\, with easy access to paved and unpaved trails. Volunteers are encouraged to spread out and work wherever they feel comfortable. Paths are shared by walkers and bikers\, but volunteers can spend their entire cleanup on flat\, paved trails. Volunteers also have the option to stick to sidewalks and city streets. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nAdvance registration for this event is not required for individuals or for groups of 10 or fewer. \nIf you have a group of 10-20 people\, please contact FMR’s Volunteer & Outreach Coordinator at volunteer@fmr.org(link sends e-mail) or 651.222.2193 x27. We’ll work with you to determine which cleanup site is a better fit for your group. \nFor groups of 20 or more\, please contact Kristina Anderson\, kanderson@minneapolisparks.org(link sends e-mail) to be assigned a location that will better fit your group size. \nThis event is supported by the Longfellow Community Council; Longfellow area residents are encouraged to attend. The event is also part of the Friends of the Mississippi River Gorge Stewards program\, actively engaging community members throughout the Twin Cities in the stewardship of the Mississippi River Gorge.

It was at that first performance here at the ruins of the former 3rd Precinct where Paul met Chris Mozena\, board member of Longfellow Rising\, who then pitched the idea of remounting Facing the Fire\, with a deeper focus on social justice\, and the municipal neglect of the property\, which is a persistent reminder of the horrible events of that summer and an ever-present eyesore that magnifies the City’s longstanding inability to address the community’s needs.\n\nThe projection art in Facing the Fire is composed of hundreds of images sourced from local and international media\, street art from around the nation\, graphs whose statistics chart the violence perpetrated onto local communities by outside radical fascist groups\, archival images from the history of civil unrest along last Street since the 1900’s\, and many recent images of the destroyed buildings in the neighborhood\, images of citizens protesting during the summer of 2020\, and children\, for whom we need to build a better future.
