SUMMARY:Rising from the Ashes: Member Show at Vine Arts Center
DESCRIPTION:This fall marks the end of a year of shows at the Vine Arts Center with artwork from community members\, gallery members and an artist from Iowa. Our members are preparing to celebrate  that with “Rising From The Ashes” on September 16 from 6:00 to 9:00. The following week on Sept 23rd and 24th  from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM the gallery will be open during LoLa (League of Longfellow Artists). The gallery is open on Saturdays during shows from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Other events may be scheduled. \nWork will be shown by members Anita White (the artist who created that great Longfellow map on our postcards and stickers!)\, Aribert Munzner\, Candace Carlson\, Gordon Coons\, John Box\, Julie Liebelt\, Kat Corrigan\, Kathleen Crook\, Kathleen Davis\, Kim Pickering\, Leah Bukovchan-Gossom\, Lori Grafing\, MasakoOnodera\, Raven Miller\, Reime Jahr\, Rick Pirtle\, Rubin Latz\, Sarah Hopkins\, Stephen Hoffer\, Sue Kolstad\, Tanya Beyer\, Thrace Soryn\, Wendy Henry. The artists have continued to work during Covid and through the rebuilding of the gallery. \nLast year when The Vine Arts Center reopened with the annual Member Show and a celebration of the new space it was dedicated to Howard Gelb who encouraged the artists to establish the gallery in his building. After over two years of reconstruction\, The Vine Arts Center and Ivy Building For The Arts were able to reopen. In 2020 after being closed because of Covid\, during the civil unrest a wayward spark fell on the building roof and caused the fire. Neighbors and tenants gathered hoses and kept the fire from spreading as best they could until the fire department was able to get there a few hours later. The building experienced a lot of damage from smoke\, water\, and some flames. This required reconstruction of most of it. \nThe rebuild of the center has been possible through the generous contributions of organizations and individuals. It has been fortunate to receive private donations as well as grant money. \nWe introduced a new policy of providing a sign language interpreter for the opening shows. We will continue this for openings the rest of this year. \nVine Arts Center is a non-profit\, member-run organization supporting emerging and established artists\, partnering with the community\, and providing space and support for visiting shows and events.

SUMMARY:A People's Security Budget: An Interactive Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:How do we want to live together and resource our neighborhoods to keep everyone living there safe and secure in a more just\, caring way?\n\nWe imagine a future Minneapolis where 5 years from now\, a neighbor-led Office of Community Safety resolves security\, emergency\, and health crises instead of a Police Department. The Police Department budget is redistributed in full to the Office of Community Safety\, and using participatory budgeting assemblies\, neighborhoods determine how to fund the security services they need. We imagine that our neighbors got tired of having an under-funded Department of Community Safety accountable to the Mayor’s office but not to their neighborhoods–so we took it over. We imagine our neighbors got tired of the over-use of force\, violence\, and displacement as a solution to security issues in their communities. We imagine people got tired of the city providing one-size fit all solutions to the complex health and social challenges we live with.\n\nIn response\, we imagine all of us cooperating to create a much more imaginative system for community safety. We imagine neighborhood associations hosting People’s Assemblies to design\, test\, roll out\, and fund unique community security programs responsive to their specific challenges and creating space to continue that work as dynamics change shape. These projects are also staffed by residents who already are experienced first-responders or becoming that. Finally\, we imagine our neighbors are holding people’s budget assemblies. There the people decide on how to fund our neighborhood and citywide visions of a secure future.\nCome and experience what it would be like to live in that future. Hang out with Confluence and your neighbors at MirrorLab where we will experiment with redistributing the nearly $200 Million (and growing) Minneapolis Police Department Budget through hands-on play and collective imagining. Together we will explore ways to expand our definitions of security and our systems for community safety.\n\nOpening Night is Friday\, January 12th from 6 to 8pm.\nOpen Gallery on Saturday\, Sunday and Monday is from 10am to 2pm.\nParticipatory Budget is from 2 to 5pm on Saturday and Sunday and from 3 to 6pm on Monday.
