SUMMARY:A People's Security Budget: An Interactive Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:How do we want to live together and resource our neighborhoods to keep everyone living there safe and secure in a more just\, caring way?\n\nWe imagine a future Minneapolis where 5 years from now\, a neighbor-led Office of Community Safety resolves security\, emergency\, and health crises instead of a Police Department. The Police Department budget is redistributed in full to the Office of Community Safety\, and using participatory budgeting assemblies\, neighborhoods determine how to fund the security services they need. We imagine that our neighbors got tired of having an under-funded Department of Community Safety accountable to the Mayor’s office but not to their neighborhoods–so we took it over. We imagine our neighbors got tired of the over-use of force\, violence\, and displacement as a solution to security issues in their communities. We imagine people got tired of the city providing one-size fit all solutions to the complex health and social challenges we live with.\n\nIn response\, we imagine all of us cooperating to create a much more imaginative system for community safety. We imagine neighborhood associations hosting People’s Assemblies to design\, test\, roll out\, and fund unique community security programs responsive to their specific challenges and creating space to continue that work as dynamics change shape. These projects are also staffed by residents who already are experienced first-responders or becoming that. Finally\, we imagine our neighbors are holding people’s budget assemblies. There the people decide on how to fund our neighborhood and citywide visions of a secure future.\nCome and experience what it would be like to live in that future. Hang out with Confluence and your neighbors at MirrorLab where we will experiment with redistributing the nearly $200 Million (and growing) Minneapolis Police Department Budget through hands-on play and collective imagining. Together we will explore ways to expand our definitions of security and our systems for community safety.\n\nOpening Night is Friday\, January 12th from 6 to 8pm.\nOpen Gallery on Saturday\, Sunday and Monday is from 10am to 2pm.\nParticipatory Budget is from 2 to 5pm on Saturday and Sunday and from 3 to 6pm on Monday.

SUMMARY:Earth Day Clean Up
DESCRIPTION:Taking place just off of West River Parkway\, this cleanup is an Earth Day tradition in the Minneapolis River Gorge. People come from throughout the local river corridor\, neighborhoods and metro area – individuals\, families\, small church\, corporate and student or scout groups – to celebrate Earth Day and contribute to the health and vitality of the Mississippi River. All are welcome! This is a family-friendly event providing an excellent opportunity to get outside and work together to help improve this treasured area. We’ve returned to this site year after year and have noticed a dramatic improvement to the area thanks to dedicated volunteers like you! \nTo participate\, show up at 9:30 a.m. at either location (East 36th Street & West River Parkway or East 44th Street & West River Parkway) to sign in with FMR staff. We’ll provide all the supplies\, but feel free to wear your own gloves if you have them. Sturdy shoes and dressing in layers for the weather are strongly suggested. There will pizza from Parkway Pizza and snacks for those volunteering. \nOur two locations for this cleanup are paved parking lots\, with easy access to paved and unpaved trails. Volunteers are encouraged to spread out and work wherever they feel comfortable. Paths are shared by walkers and bikers\, but volunteers can spend their entire cleanup on flat\, paved trails. Volunteers also have the option to stick to sidewalks and city streets. \nAdvance registration for this event is not required for individuals or for groups of 10 or fewer. \nIf you have a group of 10-20 people\, please contact FMR’s Volunteer & Outreach Coordinator at volunteer@fmr.org (link sends e-mail) or 651.222.2193 x27. We’ll work with you to determine which cleanup site is a better fit for your group. \nFor groups of 20 or more\, please contact Carrie Pomeroy\, cpomeroy@fmr.org (link sends e-mail) to be assigned a location that will better fit your group size. \nThis event is supported by the Longfellow Community Council; Longfellow area residents are encouraged to attend. The event is also part of the Friends of the Mississippi River Gorge Stewards program\, actively engaging community members throughout the Twin Cities in the stewardship of the Mississippi River Gorge.
