SUMMARY:Facing the Fire: A Public Art Installation
DESCRIPTION:“Facing the Fire” is an ongoing public art project\, devised by Minneapolis artist Paul Herwig\, to reflect on the murder of George Floyd\, police brutality\, and the civil unrest of 2020. Originally presented in the fall of 2022 on Lake Street East\, east of Hiawatha Avenue in the Longfellow Neighborhood of Minneapolis\, “Facing the Fire” was composed of seven performances of projection art and sound conducted on abandoned and damaged properties all along Lake Street. \nLocal music and sound artist Queen Drea participated in two of those performances\, and is the composer and curator of the music in this iteration of Facing the Fire. It was at that first performance here at the ruins of the former 3rd Precinct where Paul met Chris Mozena\, board member of Longfellow Rising\, who then pitched the idea of remounting Facing the Fire\, with a deeper focus on social justice\, and the municipal neglect of the property\, which is a persistent reminder of the horrible events of that summer and an ever-present eyesore that magnifies the City’s longstanding inability to address the community’s needs.\n\nThe projection art in Facing the Fire is composed of hundreds of images sourced from local and international media\, street art from around the nation\, graphs whose statistics chart the violence perpetrated onto local communities by outside radical fascist groups\, archival images from the history of civil unrest along last Street since the 1900’s\, and many recent images of the destroyed buildings in the neighborhood\, images of citizens protesting during the summer of 2020\, and children\, for whom we need to build a better future. \nThis temporary art installation of projection and sound will be installed and run in a loop for 2 hours between 8pm and 10pm each evening twice weekly in April starting Friday April 7th (with an additional performance on Tuesday April 11th). That is: April 7-11-13-14-20-21-27-29. \nFor more information about Paul Herwig (the artist) can be found at: https://www.futureprojections.net/facing-the-fire.html. For more information about Longfellow Rising\, contact LR Board Chair: Jamie Schwesnedl at jamie@moonpalacebooks.com \nPaul is immensely grateful for the support of Longfellow Rising’s funding of this project. \n*Images of the projection art to be projected on the property are courtesy of artist Paul Herwig.

SUMMARY:Seward Longfellow Restorative Justice Fundraising Concert with Maria Isa
DESCRIPTION:Seward Longfellow Restorative Justice is hosting a fundraiser with a performance by Maria Isa & the Drums at Hook and Ladder (3010 Minnehaha Ave S.\, Minneapolis\, MN 55406) on Thursday\, May 4th. This concert will launch the Hook and Ladder’s annual\, award-winning Under the Canopy series.  \nThis outdoor concert is 21+ and tickets are $25 in advance or $35 at the door. Proceeds from ticket sales will benefit SLRJ. There will be a food truck on site for the duration of the show and free ice cream provided by Minnehaha Scoop.  \nSeward Longfellow Restorative Justice was founded by neighborhood residents in 2004 to work with youth cited for breaking the law in order to help them learn from their mistakes and make amends. SLRJ uses a restorative conference process that includes preparation with both parties and culminates in a conversation about what happened\, how it caused harm\, and the creation of a plan to “make things right”. SLRJ has also contributed to many important legal system reforms to transform how mistakes by youth are treated\, that is\, to move away from a punishment model to one that treats “youthful behavior” as opportunities for learning and making amends.  \nSLRJ is experiencing an increase in requests from community members who are seeking alternatives to the police and legal system response to harm and crime. Proceeds from the concert will allow SLRJ to continue to offer resources and support to each person requesting a restorative process and to continue to advocate for legal system changes including the recently introduced bill in the MN House which would increase RJ options for youth statewide.   \nMaria Isa Perez-Hedges is a Boricua singer\, songwriter\, actress\, rapper\, activist\, youth worker and international recording artist. She has performed alongside and opened for artists such as The Roots\, Bad Bunny\, Common\, Moby\, Bomba Estereo\, Sheila E\, Kendrick Lamar\, Wu Tang Clan\, Las Cafeteras\, Atmosphere\, Pedrito Martinez\, and many more. She is the founder\, producer\, and co-host for Latina Theory: Spanglish Podcast. She is also a MN State Representative for District 65B.  \nFor more information or to donate directly to SLRJ on their website\, visit slrj.org.  \nThe Hook and Ladder Under the Canopy Series is supported by: Jack Daniels\, Summit Brewing\, Slane Irish Whiskey\, KFAI – Fresh Air Community Radio\, Mpls / St Paul Magazine\, Nobool Presents\, Arbeiter Brewing\, Moon Palace Books\, The Hub Bike Co-Op\, The Hive Realty\, Lake Street Council\, & The MN State Arts Board \nAdditional support for this event provided by Seward Co-op.

SUMMARY:Bird Walk with Urban Bird Collective
DESCRIPTION:Join Urban Bird Collective on a bird walk through natural spaces in the Longfellow and Seward Neighborhoods. You’ll have the opportunity to learn and observe native bird species and discuss conversation. Sign up to reserve your spot. \nThe Urban Bird Collective was founded in 2018 to support birdwatchers of all different skill levels in leading walks in our own neighborhoods. Urban Bird Collective works to create safe and welcoming spaces for all communities to come out and explore birding and the outdoors. \nThese communities include Black\, Indigenous\, People of Color\, and the LGBTQ Communities and more. They want all communities to feel the benefits of being out in natural green spaces in our various Twin City neighborhoods and beyond. Urban Bird Collective is passionate about birdwatching and the protection of the environment. They are here to support you in developing your birding skills while we continue to improve our own. \nThe first 15 people who arrive receive either a free birding book or a pair of binoculars! \nAny questions about the bird walks\, email jasmine@sng.org. This event is organized by LCC and made possible by the Hennepin County Green Partners Grant.
