The League of Longfellow Artists (LoLa) is a nonprofit organization and voluntary association of artists who live or work in Longfellow. \nMore info: LoLaArt.org\, Facebook.com/LoLaArtistsMN \nAfter last fall’s trial run\, Longfellow artists are ready to bring  back the much loved LoLa Art Crawl\, the 12th annual neighborhood-based tour of local art organized by the League of Longfellow Artists (LoLa) since 2009\, skipping only 2020 because of  COVID-19 and the destruction caused by civil unrest after the murder of George Floyd.   \nLast year despite continuing uncertainty\, more than 60 artists stepped up to participate in a scaled  back art crawl\, which\, as is usual for LoLa\, included many sites that were outdoors or in well-venti lated indoor spaces. Despite its smaller scale and limited advertising\, and absent a printed directory\, artists enjoyed many visitors and enthusiastic support from the community that came out for the event.   \nThis year we expect something more along the lines of the usual 100+ artists at 50 or more sites for  the full-scale art crawl once again.  Visitors will have a colorful artist directory to take as a keepsake and to guide them through the neighborhood and into the creative spaces that the various artists  call home\, and to the many local businesses throughout Longfellow. You can find more information about LoLa and LoLa artists on our website\, LoLaArt.org.  Participating artists live and/or work in Greater Longfellow\, or are guests of these neighborhood artists.  \nLoLa is a volunteer-run organization of artists who live or work in Longfellow. Its mission is to partner with neighborhood arts organizations\, nonprofits\, small businesses\, and residents to support Longfellow artists at any stage in their creative lives\, and to invite and encourage community engagement with art and artists.   \n

Twin Cities residents can learn more about what actions they can take to decrease the racial disparities in home ownership. \n7 pm Screening & performances\, The premiere of “Jim Crow of the North Stories”\, the new series from Twin Cities PBS produced by Daniel Bergin and live music\, poetry\, and readings from Twin Cities luminaries\, as listed below:\n\n\n\nDaniel Pierce Bergin is a filmmaker whose work focuses on history and diversity through restorative narratives. The Twin Cities PBS Executive Producer is a winner of 15 Regional Emmy Awards. He has been recognized as a MN State Arts Board Fellow\, a City Pages Artist of the Year\, and a Bush Leadership Fellow for his work in community media. \nAutumn Brown is a mother\, artist and facilitator based in Minneapolis. She co-hosts the podcast “How to Survive the End of the World\,” and supports movements for social justice and healing as a co-owner of AORTA\, a worker-owned cooperative of facilitators and movement strategists. Autumn is a singer/songwriter and an author of speculative fiction. Her writing has been featured in Lightspeed Magazine\, the Procyon Science Fiction Anthology\, Octavia’s Brood\, and Revolutionary Mothering. \nAnthony Ceballos is a poet\, writer\, and turkey sandwich enthusiast. He lives\, breathes and writes in Minneapolis. He can be found penning staff recommendations at Birchbark Books and Native Arts. He is a first generation descendant of the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe. \nJosina Manu Maltzman (all pronouns welcome) is a writer by passion\, carpenter by trade\, and a rabble-rouser by everything else. Jo loves to build: structures\, stories\, movements. Josina believes in personal narratives as tools for change\, and that storytelling helps us to understand our world better. \nSusan Raffo (she/her) is a writer\, cultural worker and bodyworker who does much of her work through the Healing Histories Project\, a national project\, as well as locally as a core group member of REP\, a Black-led network showing up to support others in moments of crisis or urgency\, with care and respect for the full dignity and autonomy of those in crisis. Raffo is the author of Queerly Classed (1997)\, Restricted Access (1999)\, and Liberated to the Bone (forthcoming AK Press: 2022). You can find her writing and other work at www.susanraffo.com. \nJayanthi Rajasa is an archivist songstress collecting songs that speak to her struggle and empowerment and ability to be\, change\, and move forward while honoring the unremembered changers and movers of yore. She sings for people passing worlds(new or old or hardly used – meaning births and children\, hospice and funerals\, free and incarcerated\, loved or lost) and has been in more than 10 bands in The Twin Cities. Jayanthi is born of an East Indian Man and an Afro-Indigenous Woman. She loves the Theater! She loves being a teaching artist to every age and ability and holding song or poetry circles. She loves healing. She continues to work with the Million Artist Movement to dismantle racism and injustice towards people of color and dream collectively to produce actions for change and Black Liberation. Jayanthi also works with Mama Mosaic on Minnesota Girls Are Not For Sale seeking freedom for women and girl sex slaves in Minnesota. People Power Change. \nMiré Regulus is a mover\, writer\, director\, performance artist & community builder.  She works the ‘transformative intersection’ using non-linear\, rich\, poetical prose; through where her work is sited/sighted; and explorations in how body/movement/gesture hold what we know. DESCRIPTION:Join Curiosity Studio for open studios with art making experiences designed to strengthen individual and community wellness over the course of five different dates this fall.  This session will take place on Zoom from 12 to 2pm and focus on Art as a way of Stabilizing. \nEngagement in the creative process offers opportunities to cope\, examine\, and build resilience. The safety and stabilization phase is a vital component of trauma healing and requires time and consideration. This Open Studio creates an opportunity for community members to come together in an environment that promotes a sense of stabilization using meditative art processes. \nRegister here. You will receive a Zoom link before the class begins. \nAbout Curiosity Studio\nCuriosity Studio is an art therapy and trauma informed art studio located in the Longfellow neighborhood. The open studio model was originally developed by art therapist Pat Allen as a way to off-set systems of inequality by providing intentional space for groups to gather outside of traditional therapy settings.  Since 2019\, CS has adapted this model to address topics felt and experienced by the community on a monthly basis at no cost. \nAbout Longfellow Community Health Programming\nThrough funding made available by the Hennepin County CHIP Grant\, Curiosity Studio has partnered with the Longfellow Business Association and Longfellow Community Council to address consistently identified themes that impact the mental health of our employees and residents in our neighborhood. \nThese five sessions aim to address the stress\, trauma\, or violence happening in your apartment building\, workplaces\, neighborhood\, school\, or community. All sessions are in person at Curiosity Studio\, except Sept. 27 session which is over Zoom.  \nThemes include: \nSeptember 27th\, 12-2pm – Art as a way of Stabilizing (zoom) \nEngagement in the creative process offers opportunities to cope\, examine\, and build resilience. Through the artful altering of books\, community members are invited to tell their story their own way during this open studio. \nOctober 11th\, 6-8 pm – Art as a way of Fight\n“Never fight to injure\, fight to uplift.” Chanel Miller // Our aim in this group is to reflect on how fighting for our community can be translated into art. Through the process of screen printing\, participants will create messages that they wish they could tell institutions of power that uplifts our community. \nOct 14th\, 11am-1pm – Art as a way to come back to your Body\nBody scanning can be a useful way to check in with yourself and know when you need a pause. Join us to learn how to use this exercise alongside art making to build up your capacity for slowing down and checking in during the difficulties of our day to day. \nOct 24th\, 4-6 – Art as a way to Process\nHow do we process the events\, accidents\, or markers of a whole life? We look at each piece\, just a little bit at a time\, and see how it has fit together to make a whole. Mosaic shows us the importance of every piece and makes meaning with cohesive results. Let’s use mosaic as a way to start sifting through the process.

SUMMARY:Facing the Fire: Public Art Project
DESCRIPTION:Longtime resident of Howe neighborhood\, and accomplished visual artist Paul Herwig will present a public art project\, Facing the Fire\, consisting of live animated projection art and music performances along the Lake Street East corridor. \nDuring the week of October 3-9\, longtime Howe resident Paul Herwig will present “Facing the Fire”\, a public art project consisting of several live music and live animated projection art performances at sites along East Lake Street in Minneapolis\, one of the epicenters of civil unrest during the tumultuous days and nights following the murder of George Floyd and repeated police abuses in the community. Paul’s aim is to amplify the voices of residents of Longfellow and temporarily transform the scarred physical properties of the area into hauntingly beautiful temporary artistic installations that resonate with the experiences of that summer\, and the aspirations of the community today. \nWorking with Paul on two important performances during the week is Queen Drea. Queen Drea creates conceptual soundscapes by applying poetic and often metaphorical language to her lyrics and compositions. She approaches a wide scale of subjects in a multi-layered way and her performances directly respond to the surrounding environment and uses everyday experiences from the artist as a starting point. Drea is a McKnight Composers Fellow\, and multi award winning musical artist. \nPaul is a McKnight Artist Fellow\, and co-director of the much lauded Minneapolis dance & theater company\, Off-Leash Area\, recipient of numerous individual artist awards\, producer of unique community programs\, and freelance set and projection art designer for performances and events. \nThe two principal performances that anchor the project are Paul and Drea performing together at October 5th – The East Lake Library\, 8:30pm-9:30pm\, principal community sponsor East Lake Library. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a community trash pickup event before the snow falls. Everything you will need to safely pick up trash will be provided: work gloves\, plastic bags\, trash-picker tools\, and safety vests. Light snacks and water are provided\, but we ask that you bring your own water bottle. We recommend wearing a hat and sunscreen for sun protection\, and comfortable walking shoes. We will have a tent stationed at the Walgreens parking lot located at 4547 Hiawatha Ave where we will meet and hand out supplies. The event starts at 10 am but you are welcome to join later. We will have guides of the candidates running for office\, information about voting and voting rights\, and voter registration provided by the League of Women Voters as well as activities for all. DESCRIPTION:Join us for one last River Clean up before the snow falls. The River Cleanup gathers people from the neighborhood and community together to contribute to the health and vitality of the Mississippi River. All are welcome! This is a free\, family-friendly event. \nTo join the cleanup and experience the beauty of the river gorge\, simply show up between 9am and 12pm at E 36th St & W River Parkway to meet up with staff and get materials. DESCRIPTION:In May of 1863\, following the issuance of the Emancipation Proclamation by President Abraham Lincoln\, hundreds of African Americans fled slavery on two steamboats provided by the military at Fort Snelling. What happened to these families after entering the same site where Dred Scott and dozens more were enslaved by the same U.S Military? \nJoin us for the premiere of filmmaker Sophia Watkins’ documentary tracing the history of three African American families in the Greater Longfellow Neighborhood: The Lees\, the McMoores\, and the Websters. Panel discussion to follow with family members and other guests moderated by the honorable Judge LaJune Lange.
