Longfellow Neighborhood Garage Sale 2025

Every summer, the Longfellow Community Council organizes a garage sale with dozens of stops spanning Cooper, Howe, Longfellow and Hiawatha neighborhoods. Join in on the fun Saturday, June 7th, and Sunday, June 8th (time varies).

LCC will provide a digital, interactive map. Printed maps will be available at LCC offices and limited Longfellow businesses beginning May 29th. Typically there are over 70 registered sales in the Greater Longfellow Neighborhood. There’s no time like the present to start your preparation.

Hot Tips to Make Your Garage Sale Better

For those new to hosting a garage sale, Longfellow resident Julie Kearns, veteran procurer of vintage and well-worn treasures and owner of Junket Tossed & Found with over 15 years of experience, offers advice for a successful sale.

Kearns recommends clear and well-placed signage in high-traffic areas, reminding sellers to remove signs after the sale. Organization is also key, with visually appealing, clean, and uncluttered displays. “Put like items together and put enticing items out front,” she advises, suggesting sellers refresh their displays as items sell.

Pricing should be straightforward. Kearns suggests considering fixed prices or grouping items with clear signage to minimize questions. While haggling is common, sellers should decide their negotiation limits beforehand, perhaps offering an extra item instead of lowering the price. “We perceive items to have more value simply by owning them,” Kearns notes, urging sellers to be willing to part ways and let go.

Regarding payments, Kearns advises keeping higher-value items close and using a cash belt to deter theft. She also recommends accepting digital payments like Venmo and displaying a QR code for easy transactions.

Consideration should be given to item size, as many shoppers may be walking or biking. Smaller, good-value items may be more appealing. For larger items, “sold” or “hold” signs and a plan for pickup are important.

Above all, Kearns emphasizes having fun, suggesting sellers team up with neighbors, play music, and offer snacks to create a welcoming atmosphere.
