This article will serve as your guide to the Minnehaha Mile, including what each store has to offer, and what the staff thinks makes the store worth a visit. This will also include things such as addresses, hours of operation, and more so you’re able to plan your trip with ease.
Uncle Hugo’s Science Fiction Bookstore and Uncle Edgar’s Mystery Bookstore
This bookstore is two stores that have combined, including “Uncle Hugo’s Science Fiction Bookstore” and “Uncle Edgar’s Mystery Bookstore”, also known as “The Uncles.” This shop specializes in sci-fi, fantasy, and mystery books, with a little horror mixed into their collection. They sell only books, and have shelves and stacks all around the store, so there are many titles to look through.
I spoke with a staff member named John, and when asked what he thought made the store special, he said it is interesting that they specify in specific genres and have a wide selection of books within them.
He also mentioned their adorable shop dogs, named Frodo and Echo. The dogs are in the store frequently and are a delight to see as soon as you walk in. They both gave me a warm welcome before I started to explore the store, which gave me the impression of a homey atmosphere.

This store was quite an adventure to look through. They have a wide selection of home decor, furniture, kitchenware, art, hats, shoes, knick-knacks, and more. Their selection is extremely eclectic, and it’s arranged throughout their building in color/style-coded rooms and sections, making for a very aesthetically pleasing shopping experience. The store had a cozy, local vibe, and you could tell everything was arranged with love and care.
I spoke to a staff member, Natalie, about her take on what makes the store special. She said that 10% of their profits go to local people in need and that the organization changes every year, a past one has included black lives matter. She also was proud of the fact that they don’t buy anything new to practice reusing and reselling what is already made.

Turquoise Vintage
If you’re into “Pyrex”, the vintage cookware brand, then this is somewhere you’ll want to stop to add to your collection. There are many Pyrex brand items and other vintage cookware here, and the fact that it is curated and organized makes it easy to look through. Tony, the owner, has been collecting Pyrex for over thirty years and it is what she built the store around. Along with this specialty, there are also oodles of other eclectically chosen items, such as clothing, furniture, CDs, records, magazines, knick-knacks, and more.
Tony said that what makes the store specifical is the fact that customers have been delighted and surprised that many pieces of Pyrex are all in one place. Another fun thing is that the store hosts the “Minneapolis Annual Pyrex Swap”, a large flea market and shopping post specializing in cookware (mainly Pyrex) but has other fun things to look at as well. It falls on the third Sunday in September.

The store is lightly Paris-themed, including Eiffel Tower and french motifs and imagery.
I spoke with Mary, the Owner, as well as a staff member named John who has worked with her for decades. Mary said something that makes the store special is their specialty being costume jewelry, and their unique trinkets scattered throughout the store. John said that something that makes the store special along with their wide jewelry selection is the fact that they’ve been on the block for 23 years, and were here when the Minnehaha mile started. I spoke with a staff member named Lily, who said in response to my asking what makes the store special, that it’s unique that they both repair and sell second-hand clothing. Along with this, a lot of the second hand clothing they’ve received they’ve saved by fixing it themselves, and therefore keeps more clothing out of the landfill.
